Today, Chairman John Moolenaar and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party issued a joint statement criticizing Thailand's recent actions. The statement addressed Thailand's decision to deport Uyghur refugees back to China.
"Thailand's disgraceful and inhumane decision to forcibly send Uyghur refugees back to the People’s Republic of China is a blatant violation of international human rights law," they stated. They expressed concern that these individuals are being condemned to "forced labor, prison, torture, and worse," despite other countries' willingness to accept them.
The statement further emphasized that such actions are "unacceptable behavior for any member of the international community—let alone a U.S. treaty ally." It called for accountability from Thai officials involved in this decision, suggesting that sanctions could be considered as a response.
Moolenaar and Krishnamoorthi highlighted the importance of global attention on what they described as genocide occurring in Xinjiang and urged against ignoring those who facilitate it.
