State Representative Jerry Neyer has responded to Governor Gretchen Whitmer's recent proposal aimed at reforming Michigan's permitting process. During her State of the State address, the governor called on the Legislature to consider changes that would streamline the system.

Neyer expressed skepticism about the specifics of Whitmer’s plan but acknowledged its potential benefits. "Some of our department heads in state government are shaking in their boots after the governor’s speech – they know how inefficient their agencies are and how much effort it will take to fix the permitting process," said Neyer, R-Shepherd. He added, "But honestly, if she means what she says, the governor hit the nail on the head with her proposal to streamline the permitting process."

The governor's proposal includes measures such as refunding fees for permits not processed promptly and reviewing existing fees to identify opportunities for streamlining and cost reduction.

House Republicans have shown general support for a more efficient permitting system, recognizing its potential to reduce regulatory burdens and stimulate job creation. However, they remain cautious due to previous fee increases included in last year's budget by Whitmer.

"Unless the governor truly just had a massive change of heart on taxes and fees, we’re going to have to see some details before we actually trust that this plan is anything more than talking points," Neyer stated. He criticized recent fee hikes that he believes disproportionately affect middle-class workers.

Neyer also pointed out Gov. Whitmer's history of pursuing tax increases during her tenure, citing an unpopular 45 cent-per-gallon fuel tax hike proposed early in her administration as an example.
