Odil Dilmurodov sought a sense of community at Central Michigan University. After trying club sports in the fall semester, he attended a talk by Wiline Pangle, director of CMU’s Integration of Science, Technology and Engineering program (InSciTE). InSciTE emphasizes that diversity is a strength in STEM fields due to the varied perspectives it brings to problem-solving.

Dilmurodov joined InSciTE and was placed in a team with other freshmen from different STEM majors. Initially challenging, the team eventually thrived under close mentorship from InSciTE faculty, working on a research project about roadkill near CMU’s Mount Pleasant campus.

“Having that diversity and making it work was exceptional,” Dilmurodov said. He discovered his leadership abilities while applying his data analysis skills.

Insight into Diversity recognized the program with its Inspiring Programs in STEM award. “InSciTE is a cornerstone of our commitment to experiential learning in the College of Science and Engineering,” Pangle said. “The program’s emphasis on collaboration, communication, critical thinking and real-world problem solving prepares our students to be leaders in their fields.”

Dilmurodov highlighted how InSciTE taught him to value diverse perspectives. “There are creative people who excite me,” he said. “I just don’t always understand their philosophy.”

Provost Nancy Mathews noted that InSciTE aligns with CMU’s strategic plan for future learning models. “InSciTE has established a novel model for teaching and learning that all of CMU’s colleges will emulate,” she said.

Building trust between students and faculty was crucial for Dilmurodov's positive experience. Faculty support is central to the program's philosophy. “I’ve been incredibly proud to witness our program’s growth and the remarkable accomplishments of our team,” Pangle said.

InSciTE was among several programs nationwide recognized by Insight into Diversity for inspiring and encouraging young people interested in STEM careers. Lenore Pearlstein, the magazine’s owner and publisher, emphasized the importance of recognizing such programs' success and dedication.

“We know that many STEM programs are not always recognized for their success, dedication and mentorship for underrepresented students,” Pearlstein said.
