Congressman John R. Moolenaar | Rep. John R. Moolenaar Official U.S House Headshot
Congressman John Moolenaar has raised concerns about the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) espionage efforts in the United States. In a letter addressed to FBI Director Christopher Wray, Moolenaar referenced Wray's recent appearance on "60 Minutes," where he acknowledged the CCP's attempts to acquire land for spying purposes.
Moolenaar specifically focused on the Gotion facility, a proposed site in Green Charter Township, Michigan. He posed a series of questions to Director Wray regarding the potential risks associated with this facility. Moolenaar's questions revolved around the assurance that the Gotion facility would not be utilized for espionage and the potential for Chinese nationals associated with Gotion to engage in spying activities.
One of Moolenaar's concerns was the proximity of the Gotion site to Camp Grayling, where the Michigan National Guard has trained members of Taiwan's military. He urged Director Wray to guarantee that the Chinese nationals associated with Gotion would not engage in spying or be coerced into spying on Camp Grayling.
Additionally, Moolenaar questioned the efficacy of the State Department's vetting process for issuing work visas to Chinese nationals. He sought Director Wray's perspective on the trustworthiness of this process and any improvements that could be made to enhance its reliability. Moolenaar also inquired whether the State Department's vetting process could ensure that individuals admitted to the United States on work visas would not be spies for the CCP.
To support his concerns, Moolenaar highlighted a report by the Wall Street Journal, which revealed that there have been 100 attempts by Chinese nationals to access U.S. military bases. This further emphasized the need for heightened scrutiny and precautions against potential espionage activities.
As a member of The Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, Moolenaar remains committed to addressing the security challenges posed by the CCP. His letter to Director Wray reflects his dedication to ensuring the protection of national security and preventing any unauthorized access or espionage by foreign entities.
