On May 24,  Congressman John Moolenaar, Michigan's only member of the House Appropriations Committee, voted for legislation that would stop President Joe Biden's plan to transfer college loan debt from individuals to every American taxpayer. Moolenaar is a co-sponsor of the bill, H.J. Res. 45, which passed the House this afternoon.

"President Biden wants to make hardworking Michigan families pay for the degrees and debt individuals ran up when they made the choice to go to college. His unconstitutional plan was never passed by Congress and it penalizes Michigan residents who looked at their finances and made the decision not to go into debt. It also penalizes people who played by the rules and paid off their loans," said Moolenaar. "Colleges and universities should do more to lower costs and provide value to students so they can have successful careers. President Biden’s law-breaking attempt to spend billions of dollars without congressional approval is not the answer to the costs of college."

Article 1, Section 9 of the U.S. Constitution states, “No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law; and a regular Statement and Account of the Receipts and Expenditures of all public Money shall be published from time to time.” Biden’s plan to burden taxpayers with student debt was never passed by Congress.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated President Biden's student loan giveaway will cost taxpayers $400 billion. More information on the legislation can be found here.
