Michigan state Rep. Roger Hauck (R-Midland) is pushing legislation to legalize permanent liquor sales at the John G. Kulhavi Events Center on the Central Michigan University campus.

Hauck recently went before the House Regulatory Reform Committee to testify in support of the idea, according to ABC 12

The Kulhavi Center does not currently meet the state criteria stipulating that only conference centers operated by college and university governing boards are allowed to sell alcoholic beverages, as it is not officially considered a conference center. Legislation backed by Hauck seeks to change that by having the center’s designation change.

School officials are presently required to seek special liquor licenses for specific events at the facility.

“Rather than be limited to a few licenses per year, this would give the university much more flexibility to host a wider variety of events such as fundraisers, banquets, weddings, award ceremonies and business conferences,” Hauck said.
