The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has voted unanimously to tighten restrictions on the importation of certain Chinese telecommunications equipment into the United States. The new measures close existing loopholes that had permitted continued U.S. sales of previously approved devices from companies such as Huawei and Hikvision.

Select Committee on China Chairman John Moolenaar expressed his support for the FCC's decision. He stated, “Telecommunications providers and equipment makers are vital to the infrastructure of our nation and Americans depend on having safe, secure, and reliable connections for everything they do. That’s why we cannot be dependent on Chinese suppliers for this equipment. China’s telecommunications companies are tools of the Chinese Communist Party and can be used for cybersecurity attacks against our country. The FCC’s unanimous action today will close loopholes exploited by China and make our country’s infrastructure more secure,” said Moolenaar.

The FCC's action comes amid ongoing concerns about national security risks posed by foreign technology in critical communications networks.
