State Representative Tom Kunse, R-Clare, expressed satisfaction as his proposal to reallocate funds for local road repairs progressed through the House Floor.

"Michigan residents were promised road repairs years ago, yet they’re still dodging potholes on nearly every street," said Kunse. "This plan delivers the solution they’ve been waiting for—directing state funds to local roads without raising taxes."

The proposal suggests eliminating the sales tax on fuel and replacing it with an equivalent adjustment in the fuel tax. This change aims to ensure that all generated funds are dedicated solely to road repairs. Presently, a significant portion of this revenue is used for unrelated projects, leaving roads neglected. The plan has received backing from Americans for Tax Reform and other organizations who have confirmed its revenue-neutral status and potential to enhance Michigan’s infrastructure without imposing additional financial burdens on taxpayers.

"These groups recognize the benefits of this approach, and we are grateful for their support," said Kunse. "Their assistance emphasizes that this plan is a responsible and effective way to get our roads back on track."

"I’m proud to see my plan from last term move forward with strong sponsors," added Kunse. "Michigan taxpayers work hard for their money and deserve better. They shouldn’t have to pay more just to get the safe, reliable roads they were promised."
