FOIA Request Sent to Clare County Election Division Regarding Upcoming Election Candidates on February 5, 2025

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Clare County Election Division on February 5, 2025. The request was made by East Michigan News, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.

The request specifically asked for records under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act § 15.231 et seq., in electronic format if possible. The records requested include a list of all candidates running in the upcoming election. This list should contain details such as the candidate's first, middle, and last names; the office they are running for; jurisdiction of the office; and party affiliation.

In addition to these details, East Michigan News also requested contact information for each candidate. This includes their address, phone number, and email address.

As a media organization, East Michigan News stated that access to public records is essential for fulfilling its professional responsibilities. These responsibilities include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given its role in disseminating information, East Michigan News believes it is eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional.

The Clare County Election Division has yet to respond to this request.
