This week, the Department of Defense (DoD) announced the blacklisting of several Chinese companies operating in the United States, citing their ties to China's military. This action is part of ongoing efforts by the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party to scrutinize entities linked to China's defense sector.
Select Committee Chairman John Moolenaar expressed support for this measure during an appearance on Fox Business. He stated, "I applaud this new listing – we should not be allowing these Chinese defense-related companies to partner with our companies, and we certainly shouldn't be using taxpayer dollars to fund countries that could be, as an adversary, working against our own military. And so, this is long overdue, but it's a step in the right direction."
The blacklist highlights various sectors critical to U.S. national security such as drones and semiconductors. Moolenaar emphasized the importance of not allowing American infrastructure, particularly military infrastructure, to rely on entities connected to the Chinese Communist Party.
The DoD's list includes a range of companies identified through investigations and reports over recent years. Among them are Global Tone Communication Technology Co., Ltd., Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Limited, and China Communications Construction Group Limited. Additionally, tech giants like Huawei Investment & Holding Co., Ltd., Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), and Shenzhen DJI Innovation Technology Co., Ltd. have been spotlighted.
This move aligns with previous legislative actions aimed at curbing potential security threats posed by foreign corporations associated with adversarial governments.
