Feast Week has arrived, and the Eastern Insider podcast's latest episode dives into a busy week for Eastern Michigan University (EMU) athletics. Hosts Tom Helmer and Greg Steiner discussed various upcoming events, including basketball tournaments and crucial football games.

The men's basketball team recently secured an important win against Oakland, demonstrating improved teamwork. This victory sets them up for another Metro Series match against Detroit Mercy. The women's team aims to end their losing streak with a game against Detroit Mercy before facing Xavier. "These non-conference matchups are essential building blocks toward Mid-American Conference play," noted Greg Steiner.

Football takes center stage as EMU prepares for its rivalry game against Western Michigan. Both teams share a 5-6 record, with bowl eligibility at stake. "A win could salvage Eastern's season and extend their bowl streak," said the hosts, emphasizing the importance of this game.

Defensive lineman Joey Zelinsky sees Saturday's game as more than just his last regular-season appearance; it's a chance to secure bowl eligibility and reclaim the Michigan MAC Trophy. "It's like a Super Bowl vibe," he stated in an interview on The Eastern Insider Podcast.

Zelinsky's journey to EMU was unconventional, marked by academic struggles and financial hardships. His persistence led him to Hudson Valley Community College, where he eventually caught the attention of EMU's coaching staff through handwritten letters. "Coach Needham was the only one to respond," Zelinsky recalled.

Head coach Chris Creighton also shared his thoughts on Saturday’s matchup in Kalamazoo against Western Michigan, describing it as significant in the history of the Michigan MAC Trophy rivalry. "We're playing for the Michigan MAC championship," Creighton stated.

Despite recent losses, Creighton praised his team's resilience: "Our team hasn't cracked." He highlighted Western Michigan's balanced offense and emphasized minimizing turnovers as key factors for success.

As EMU strives for a bowl berth on Saturday, both players' journeys reflect determination and resilience—a theme resonating throughout this week's high-stakes athletic contests.
