Despite a valiant comeback effort, the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team narrowly lost to the University of Toledo with a final score of 90-87. The game took place on January 7 at Savage Arena in Toledo, Ohio.
Eastern Michigan overcame an early deficit to take a lead late in the game. The Eagles were behind by 13 points at halftime but managed to pull ahead 74-73 with just over two minutes remaining. However, Toledo regained control and secured the win.
Christian Henry led Eastern Michigan with 25 points, followed closely by Jalen Terry with 23 points and Da'Sean Nelson with 20 points. This marked the first time since December 2017 that three Eagles players scored over 20 points in a single game.
The match saw Eastern Michigan trailing early before tying it up at 17-17. Toledo then went on a significant run to lead by as many as 16 points in the first half. Eastern Michigan responded strongly after halftime, narrowing the gap to three points shortly into the second half.
Despite their efforts, including Henry's last-second half-court shot, Eastern Michigan fell short as Toledo extended their lead towards the end of regulation time.
Eastern Michigan now holds an overall record of 7-7 and is even in conference play at 1-1. Meanwhile, Toledo improved to an overall record of 8-6 and remains undefeated in conference action at 2-0.
Key performances included Dillon Tingler's career-high eight rebounds and Christian Henry setting a personal best with five made three-pointers. Jalin Billingsley contributed significantly despite limited playing time due to foul trouble.
Historically, this result moved EMU's all-time record against Toledo to 52 wins and 64 losses. The Eagles maintained their streak of games with multiple three-pointers made, extending it further after this matchup.
Looking ahead, Eastern Michigan will host Akron on January 11 following their women's basketball game against Akron Zips.
