In a move to challenge President Biden's push for electric vehicles, Congressman John Moolenaar voted in favor of passing H.R. 4468, the Choice in Automobile Retail Sales (CARS) Act of 2023. This legislation aims to block the enforcement of the Biden administration's rules on tailpipe emission standards, which would effectively phase out gas-powered vehicles from the market and promote the sale of electric vehicles in the United States.

Moolenaar expressed his concerns about President Biden's agenda and its potential implications. He stated, "President Biden’s push for electric vehicles goes against what the American people want and plays right into the hands of the Chinese Communist Party, which wants to monopolize critical minerals and the EV supply chain. When our nation made the shift from typewriters to computers, we didn’t need government rules to end the sale of typewriters. President Biden should end his out-of-touch EPA rules and let Americans choose the vehicles they want."

President Biden has set an ambitious target of having two-thirds of new cars sold in the U.S. to be electric by 2032. However, the demand for electric vehicles in 2023 has been lower than expected. CNBC even reported that "electric vehicles are piling up at dealership lots." This data suggests that the market may not be ready to fully embrace electric vehicles as quickly as anticipated.

The CARS Act, of which Moolenaar is an original cosponsor, passed the House of Representatives with a vote of 221 to 197. This legislation seeks to give consumers the freedom to choose the vehicles they prefer, rather than being compelled to switch to electric vehicles.

The debate surrounding the future of the automotive industry and the role of electric vehicles continues to be a contentious issue. Critics argue that the government should not impose strict regulations that restrict consumer choice, while proponents of electric vehicles emphasize the need to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.

As the CARS Act moves forward, it remains to be seen how it will impact the future of electric vehicles in the United States. The decision to block the enforcement of Biden administration rules on tailpipe emission standards signifies a pushback against the government's involvement in the automotive market. The debate on the best path forward for the industry and the environment will undoubtedly continue.
