Congressman John Moolenaar and other members of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) are demanding answers from TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew about why TikTok censored the Acton Institute, a Grand Rapids think tank. The Institute’s account was suspended last week when it posted videos about Jimmy Lai, a jailed journalist and pro-democracy activist in Hong Kong.
"TikTok is actively working on behalf of the CCP to attack free speech right here in Michigan. CEO Shou Zi Chew must answer more questions about why he claims his company is independent but continues to censor free speech the CCP does not like," said Moolenaar. "Michigan residents simply cannot trust TikTok or the CCP.”
In a letter to Chew, Moolenaar and other members of the Select Committee write “TikTok has repeatedly made decisions that are directly aligned with the CCP’s censorship priorities. For example, TikTok has secretly suppressed topics the PRC finds politically sensitive, including its genocide of Uyghur Muslims, the status of Tibet, and the 1989 massacre in Tiananmen Square.”
The members also ask Chew to provide "any and all documents and communications related to moderation decisions around Acton’s account, including content censorship, account suspension and reinstatement.”
