On May 3, 2023, the Acton Institute, a Grand Rapids think tank, announced it was suspended by TikTok, a Chinese Communist Party-controlled social media app. The suspension came after the Institute posted videos about Jimmy Lai, the jailed journalist and pro-democracy activist in Hong Kong, who founded the Apple Daily newspaper there.
"CCP-controlled TikTok just censored a West Michigan think tank for telling the truth. This is yet another example of how the CCP uses its resources in America to expand its influence over our communities. TikTok claims to be independent from the CCP, but this shows otherwise. I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to ban Tiktok or force its sale to an American company,” said Congressman John Moolenaar.
"Michigan residents and their leaders should take note of how in just the past few years the CCP is getting more aggressive in using its resources in America including buying farmland, running secret police stations, and using social media. It would be wrong to allow a CCP-affiliated company to build a factory in Michigan,” added Moolenaar.
Acton Institute Communications Director Eric Kohn documented the Institute’s suspension in a series of tweets on Wednesday.
