Shepherd Police Department issued the following announcement on Feb 10.
The role of a protector is a crucial one in the world we live in. This is especially true for our children. Times have changed and it isn't the 80's or 90's anymore.
We stand almost every morning and afternoon, often with Superintendent Starr, Transportation Director Sura and Parapro DuBois, at the Shepherd Public School District bus loop and watch some amazing young people arrive for school and leave after another day of learning.
We have noticed that every day, a mom drops off her son, who we guess is about 5-6 years old. She gives him a hug/kiss and he makes the few hundred foot trek into Shepherd Elementary. About every step and a half, the boy turns around and waves at his mom and she waves back to him. He finds safety and comfort in her role as a protector in his life. She finds comfort and safety in knowing that she is mere seconds from him. Ultimately though, she cannot stay all day standing on the sidewalk. She has to trust that the staff and our department will give safety and comfort to the most precious thing in her life.
They say "it takes a village to raise a child" and we couldn't agree more! This is COMMUNITY!
