This week, the House Select Committee on China, led by Chairman John Moolenaar and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi, has called upon Secretary of State Marco Rubio to consider imposing sanctions on Hong Kong Police Commissioner Joe Chow Yat-ming. The committee accuses the commissioner of playing a key role in the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) efforts to suppress democracy and erode Hong Kong's autonomy.
In March 2025, Secretary Rubio sanctioned former Hong Kong Police Commissioner Raymond Siu, signaling U.S. support for Hong Kong residents. Following these sanctions, Siu retired from his position.
The letter from the committee states: "Unfortunately, Chinese Communist Party-directed officials in Hong Kong continue to undermine its autonomy and freedoms." It highlights incidents during the anniversary of the CCP’s Tiananmen Square Massacre when police allegedly intimidated mourners and detained individuals for actions such as holding flowers or gathering in public spaces.
The committee emphasizes that as the CCP continues to expand its authoritarian influence globally, the United States remains committed to upholding human rights and democracy worldwide.
