City of Lansing recently issued the following announcement.
#TBT to 1920 when Lansing's first public zoo opened. Sarah and James W. Potter first donated 58 acres of woodsy land to the city in 1910. Seven years later, they deeded another 27 acres. The zoo officially opened in 1920, and by 1927, thanks to an additional 17-acre donation from Sophie Turner, Potter Park Zoo increased to a sprawling 102 acres.
In the early years of the zoo, there was no barrier separating the zoo from Potter Park, so there was no admission fee. Elk, a bear, two raccoons, and several deer were the first species to live at Potter Park.
Decade after decade Potter Park welcomed more and more residents to the zoo. The Lion House and monkey exhibits were built in 1930, the Aviary in 1940, and by 1972 Potter Park Zoo welcomed its first elephant, Bingo (pictured).
In 1986, Potter Park Zoo gained an accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums — signifying that Potter Park meets the highest standards in animal care.
Potter Park Zoo has been a long-time Lansing fixture, providing care for animals and education for visitors for over 100 years. Here's to another hundred.
