City of Lansing issued the following announcement on Sept 29.
Mayor Andy Schor today announced that Governor Whitmer has signed a budget deal for Fiscal Year 2021-2022 (effective October 1) that includes several funding items for the City of Lansing:
• $2 million for a Performing Arts Center in Lansing
• $75,000 for cold case work
• $1 million for security cameras and policing at the Capitol
• $1.4 million for the bridge at Aurelius Road over Pawlowski Creek
As the Capital City, Lansing has had many protests over the years. Support from the state for Lansing Police and Public Service to assist with public safety and cameras for events at the Capitol recognizes the significant resources that the City of Lansing provides to the state during large events.
Lansing recently partnered with the Detroit Crime Commission for assistance in relieving cold cases for families of victims and these dollars will go a long way to breaking the backlog.
Mayor Andy Schor’s administration has had on-going conversations, public input sessions and studies conducted to determine the need for and the feasibility of constructing a 1,200-1,500 seat facility in Lansing, that would also be the new home to the Lansing Public Media Center. The City of Lansing has determined that it can use up to $8 million in Public, Education and Government access programming (PEG) fees to go toward this project. PEG fees are a dedicated source of funding that must be used to support the Lansing Public Media Center. The $2 million in funding from the state of Michigan will allow the City of Lansing to move forward with this monumental project.
