Michigan property owners struggling to pay bills don’t have to worry about losing their homes because they owe back taxes, as Gov. Gretchen Whitmer extended the property tax foreclosure deadline until after the new coronavirus emergency ends.
Whitmer’s executive order extended the deadline from March 31 for two months or more, in recognition of the effects the pandemic is having on state residents. She has extended it to May 29, or 30 days after the COVID-19 emergency ends, whichever comes later.
“Residents should be focused on staying healthy and safe and shouldn’t have to worry about losing their home at the end of March,” Clare County Treasurer Jenny Beemer-Fritzinger told the Clare County Review.
The treasurer’s office in Clare County, like most in the state, closed to help curb the community spread of the virus in Michigan. But they are still working. “My staff and I will continue to carry out our duties, and that includes helping people and families whose homes are at risk of foreclosure," said Beemer-Fritzinger.
Property owners can make tax payments online. To check current tax year information or to access delinquent tax information, visit the Clare County website.
Property owners can mail payments to 225 Main St., P.O. Box 564, Harrison, MI 48625. Call the treasurer’s office at 989-539-7801 to arrange to drop off your payment.
