Congressman John Moolenaar’s Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act has advanced in the legislative process after passing the House Committee on Education and Workforce. The bill aims to affirm the authority of Native American tribes to manage labor relations within their territories, giving them similar self-determination as state and local governments.
“The Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act is about fairness and respect. Tribal governments should have the same authority as every other level of government in America to make decisions for their people and their communities,” said Congressman Moolenaar. “This legislation recognizes the sovereignty of tribes and ensures they have the ability to create policies that best serve their members. I am grateful for the support it received in the Education and Workforce Committee, and will continue my work to deliver this important protection for tribal communities.”
The legislation has been a focus for many Native American leaders, with 33 tribes across the United States sending letters of support during its consideration by the committee. The bill would put tribes on equal footing with states and territories under the National Labor Relations Act, reinforcing tribal self-governance and federal commitments to honor tribal sovereignty.
John Moolenaar currently represents Michigan’s 2nd district in Congress, having taken office in 2015 after Dave Camp. He previously served in both chambers of Michigan’s state legislature before joining Congress. Moolenaar was born in Midland, Michigan, in 1961 and now resides in Caledonia. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Hope College in 1983.
