State Representative Bill G. Schuette has testified on funding requests aimed at infrastructure and flood mitigation in Midland and Gladwin counties. The testimony is part of the ongoing state budget process.

Schuette is advocating for $10 million to support the Four Lakes Task Force in their efforts to repair dams that failed, causing significant flooding in 2020. "This devastating flooding destroyed the homes and lives of thousands in Midland County," said Schuette during his testimony before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor and Economic Opportunity. He emphasized the need for additional funds to alleviate financial burdens on affected residents.

In addition, Schuette requested another $10 million for flood reduction infrastructure in Midland. The city faces risks due to its location downstream from multiple river systems, making it vulnerable to severe flooding events. Schuette highlighted similar successful initiatives in other regions like San Antonio, Texas, where investments have been made in pump stations and floodways.

Reflecting on past events, Schuette remarked, "If you think back to five years ago...the town of Midland, Michigan completely flooded." He stressed the importance of rebuilding stronger dams and ensuring that property owners can enjoy regional resources without financial strain.

"We’re addressing two sides of a coin with these requests," he stated. The goal is not only to rebuild but also to protect homeowners from future disasters.
