State Representative Tom Kunse, a Republican from Clare, has reintroduced a proposal to rename a section of US 131 near Big Rapids in honor of Sergeant Matthew Webber, an army veteran who died from injuries sustained overseas.

Webber was affectionately called "Miracle Matt" by hospital staff during his five-and-a-half-month battle in a U.S. hospital due to the resilience he showed despite severe injuries.

"Sgt. Webber symbolizes what it means to be a true American hero who sacrificed everything for their country," stated Kunse. "It is an honor that I am able to contribute to ensuring that Matthew’s legacy will live on for future generations."

Hailing from Stanwood, Webber enlisted in the Army National Guard while still in high school and rose to become a squad leader with the rank of Sergeant. He served in the United States Army from 2000 until his death in 2006 and was awarded both the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his service. Western Michigan University also posthumously awarded him a degree.

Kunse noted, "After hearing Matthew’s incredible story, we knew we had to do everything we could to honor his legacy." His team committed personal time to raise $6,000 necessary for signage if the bill is enacted into law. "I’m incredibly proud to have a staff that goes the extra mile for our community," he added.

The Stanwood community actively supported the initiative by raising funds needed for Webber's sign when they learned about efforts to name the Muskegon River overpass on U.S. 131 after him.

Although legislative approval is required for highway naming, typically families bear costs related to signage purchase and installation.

The Transportation and Infrastructure Committee heard testimony regarding this bill on Tuesday morning and unanimously passed it through committee review.
