Chairman John Moolenaar of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party expressed approval for President Trump's recent decision to implement tariffs on the People's Republic of China. The tariffs, which took effect at midnight, are accompanied by the closure of the "de minimis" loophole. This loophole previously allowed goods valued under $800 to enter the United States without inspection or duties.

The Select Committee had previously highlighted in a report how this loophole was exploited by companies such as Shein and Temu. These companies were accused of flooding American markets with products often produced through forced labor, negatively impacting American jobs.

"Eliminating the de minimis exclusion is a critical step in ensuring fair competition for American workers and companies while stopping the import of Chinese goods made with forced labor," stated Chairman Moolenaar. He emphasized that the Select Committee has been proactive in addressing these issues, including shedding light on China's role in the fentanyl crisis.

Moolenaar further remarked, "I stand firmly with President Trump in taking action to hold the CCP accountable and protect the American people." He urged Congress to pass legislation to permanently address de minimis treatment for products imported from China.

The committee's report on Temu and Shein's use of de minimis is available online, along with proposed legislation aimed at ending Permanent Normal Trade Relations with China.
