The Eastern Michigan University (EMU) tennis team faced a narrow defeat against the University of Dayton, with the Flyers securing a 4-3 victory at the South Regency Tennis Center in Miamisburg, Ohio. Despite winning the doubles point for the fourth consecutive match this season, EMU could not maintain their lead in singles play.
Regina Mendez delivered an impressive performance for EMU, winning her first doubles match in dual competition alongside Marta Komar and also achieving success in her singles match. "Our doubles point continues to be a positive for us," stated Head Coach Ryan Kucera. He added that while Komar and Mendez displayed strong chemistry to win their doubles match, the team struggled to refocus during singles play.
In doubles action, Iva Daneva and Viki Hazmukova claimed victory at No. 2 with a score of 6-2. The No. 1 duo of Komar and Mendez followed up with a 6-4 win, clinching the doubles point for EMU and giving them an early lead.
Dayton responded by leveling the dual with a win at No. 2 singles before Daneva's triumph at No. 4 returned EMU to a brief lead of 2-1. However, Dayton secured victories at No. 3, No. 6, and No. 1 singles matches to clinch their overall win with a score of 4-2. Mendez managed to close out the dual on a positive note for EMU by winning her match at No. 5 singles.
With this result, EMU's record stands at two wins and two losses for the season while Dayton improved to three wins and one loss.
Looking ahead, EMU is set to face two Michigan schools next weekend: Oakland University Golden Grizzlies on February 1st at home and Michigan State University on February 2nd away.
