Kent State edges past Eastern Michigan in opening gymnastics meet

Eastern Michigan University's gymnastics team faced a challenging start to their Mid-American Conference season, falling to Kent State University. The competition took place on Sunday, January 26, at the George Gervin GameAbove Center in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The final score saw Eastern Michigan trailing with 194.525 points against Kent State's 195.425.

The event was themed as the "Purple & Alumni Meet," aimed at promoting epilepsy awareness and honoring alumni of the program. Raisa Boris from Brooklyn Park, Minnesota emerged as a standout performer for Eastern Michigan, achieving a season-best all-around score of 39.175. Her performance placed her first among competitors who participated in all four events.

In the vault event, both Boris and Gwendelyn Cantu scored 9.750 each, leading their team to an overall score of 48.600. Kyrie Lowe led the Eagles on uneven bars with a score of 9.825 while Boris and Keeley Kohler followed closely behind with scores of 9.725 each.

Ella Chemotti excelled on the balance beam with a personal best for this season at 9.850, helping Eastern Michigan outscore Kent State in this category with a total of 48.925 points.

On floor exercises, Raisa Boris once again led her team with a score of 9.875 securing second place among all competitors in this event.

Despite some strong individual performances, Eastern Michigan ended the meet with its lowest point total for the season so far at 194.525 points.

Looking ahead, EMU will travel to Northern Illinois University for their next meet scheduled on February 2nd in DeKalb, Illinois.
