The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team is preparing to host Kent State on Sunday, January 26, at the George Gervin GameAbove Center in Ypsilanti. The meet will begin at 1 p.m. and will be part of the "Purple & Alumni Meet," an event promoting epilepsy awareness while recognizing program alumni.
The Eagles have had a strong start to their season, achieving a 4-0 record for the first time since at least 2001. This includes victories over Northern Illinois and Winona State, as well as a narrow win against MAC preseason favorite Ball State with a score of 195.125 to 195.000 on January 17.
Senior gymnast Raisa Boris has been recognized for her performance, being named MAC Gymnast of the Week on January 21 and MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week on January 22. Boris excelled in all four events during recent competitions, highlighted by a second-place finish on beam with a score of 9.825.
Junior Priya Karle also contributed significantly to the team's success at the Golden Girls Classic by posting a career-high score of 9.850 on floor exercise, aiding Eastern Michigan's victory over MAC rivals Ball State and Northern Illinois.
Eastern Michigan was picked to finish fifth in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) preseason poll but currently stands as the top-ranked team in the conference and holds a national ranking of 30th.
The team looks forward to continuing its strong performance this season under new assistant coach Lauren Volpe, who joined from Ball State University after helping them achieve back-to-back MAC championships.
