The Eastern Michigan University (EMU) tennis team is set to begin its 2025 dual season by hosting Ferris State University for a doubleheader on Saturday, January 18. The matches will take place at the Chippewa Club in Ypsilanti, Michigan, with the first match starting at 3:30 p.m. and the second one following at approximately 7 p.m.
"The 2025 spring season will feature 23 duals with 12 coming at home at the Chippewa Club," according to the press release. EMU has an impressive home record, having been undefeated at home in 2024 and not losing a home match since April 16, 2023.
The Eagles have struggled in recent season openers, holding a record of 23-24 all-time and losing their last three opening matches. However, they have fared better when opening the season at home, winning their last three such matches.
Ferris State is one of four Michigan schools EMU will face this year. The Eagles are close to achieving their 100th victory against intrastate competition with a current record of 99-111.
Ryan Kucera returns as head coach for his second season and aims to guide EMU back to the MAC Tournament for consecutive years—a feat last achieved by the team in 2014 and 2015.
The team's roster includes ten players from nine different countries, showcasing an international lineup that includes both seasoned players and newcomers.
Assistant coaches Masha Polishchukand and Andrew Dobbs join the staff this year. "Players are not the only addition to the roster this year," noted the release about these new appointments.
Following their doubleheader against Ferris State, EMU will play Oakland University at home on February 1 before heading to Michigan State on February 2. These matches are part of their schedule against fellow Michigan institutions where they hold a historical advantage over some opponents like Oakland (17-2 all-time).
As they prepare for another competitive season, EMU's focus remains on returning to postseason success akin to their achievements back in 2001 when they advanced through the MAC Tournament into the NCAA First Round.
