The Biden Administration has decided to withhold funding from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), following allegations of corruption and cover-up related to doping by Chinese athletes. The decision was influenced by WADA's refusal to investigate claims that more than two dozen Chinese swimmers tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs prior to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, yet were allowed to compete and win medals.
Chairman John Moolenaar expressed his support for the funding freeze, stating, "The U.S. decision to withhold funding from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is a critical first step toward accountability and reform. This funding freeze sends a clear message: the U.S. will not bankroll corruption." He highlighted efforts alongside Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi in calling on the FBI to investigate the alleged cover-up and their introduction of a bipartisan bill aimed at holding WADA accountable.
Ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, it was reported that 23 Chinese swimmers tested positive for trimetazidine but continued participating after delays in reporting by China's anti-doping agency and WADA's lack of intervention. Despite evidence presented by U.S. and global anti-doping officials, WADA did not initiate an independent review.
Concerns have been raised about potential state-sponsored doping practices akin to those previously associated with Russia. In May 2024, Moolenaar and Krishnamoorthi urged both the U.S. Department of Justice and International Olympic Committee to conduct formal inquiries into these practices.
In July 2024, legislation titled Restoring Confidence in the World Anti-Doping Agency Act was introduced by Moolenaar, Krishnamoorthi, Senator Marsha Blackburn, and Senator Chris Van Hollen. The act aims to empower the Office of National Drug Control Policy with authority over withholding membership dues if WADA fails in its role as an independent entity ensuring drug-free competitions.
