Eastern Michigan University athletes Lucky Ezechukwuchiri and Josephine Oloye have been recognized by the Mid-American Conference (MAC) as the Men's Field Athlete of the Week and Women's Track Athlete of the Week, respectively. The announcement was made by the conference's office on Tuesday, December 10.
Ezechukwuchiri, hailing from Nimo, Nigeria, achieved this honor for the first time following his impressive performance at the GVSU Holiday Open on December 6. Competing in his collegiate debut, he secured second place in the high jump with a leap of 2.09 meters (6-10.25). This jump currently stands as the best in the MAC and eighth-best nationally. Notably, Eli Kosiba from Grand Valley State University won the event with a jump that tied an NCAA Division II record.
Josephine Oloye, originally from Iwaro-Oka, Nigeria, also earned her first athlete of the week accolade after winning first place in the 400-meter dash at the same event. Her time of 54.68 seconds is not only a personal best but also ranks as the top time in MAC so far this season and third nationally.
These awards are significant for Eastern Michigan University's track and field team as they mark their first dual recognition since last April when multiple athletes were honored.
The Eagles are set to compete next at the Wolverine Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan on January 11.
