Eastern Michigan University's women's basketball team faced a tough road opener, losing to Michigan State University 95-46 at the Breslin Center in East Lansing on November 11. Despite the defeat, standout player Sisi Eleko delivered her second consecutive double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds. This performance marked the highest individual score against Michigan State this season.
The Spartans took an early lead, finishing the first quarter ahead by 29-14. Eleko contributed significantly with 11 points during this period, while Olivia Smith added a three-pointer. The trend continued into the second quarter as Michigan State extended their lead by scoring another 29 points compared to Eastern's 11.
After halftime, Eastern struggled offensively but managed to hold Michigan State under their usual scoring threshold for the first time this season. The game concluded with Michigan State adding 22 points in the final quarter against Eastern's 15.
Eleko's performance stood out as she previously scored 17 points and secured 16 rebounds against Alabama A&M on November 9. Olivia Westphal also made an impact by successfully making four three-point shots, continuing her streak of three or more triples per game since the season began.
Mackenzie Amalia led her team in assists with six and contributed five points to Eastern's efforts. The Eagles' total of 25 first-half points was notable as it was the most allowed by Michigan State in an opening half this year.
With this loss, Eastern fell to a record of 0-3 for the season while Michigan State advanced to a perfect start at 3-0. Historically, Eastern has struggled against Michigan State, now holding a record of just one win in eighteen meetings.
Eastern will next face Purdue University Fort Wayne after a ten-day break on November 21 at George Gervin GameAbove Center. Fans can watch live on ESPN+ or listen via WEMU (89.1 FM) and Varsity Network with Tom Helmer providing commentary.
