The Eastern Michigan University (EMU) soccer team secured a vital 1-0 victory against Kent State University in the Mid-American Conference. The match, held at Scicluna Field on October 27, was decided by senior Maddie O'Farrell's goal in the fifth minute. This win marked EMU's eighth clean sheet of the season.
Eastern completed its home schedule with a record of 5-0-3, marking only the second time in program history that they have remained unbeaten at home, a feat last achieved in 1999. As of Sunday, EMU stands tenth in the MAC with 11 points. They are closely trailing fifth-place Kent State and Northern Illinois, both with 13 points, as well as Central Michigan and Toledo, each with 12 points.
The decisive goal came early when redshirt sophomore Sophia Baumann assisted senior Meagan Lukowski, who then set up O'Farrell for her successful strike from 12 yards out. The goal occurred just four minutes and twenty-eight seconds into the match.
Redshirt sophomore Ella Holland played a crucial role throughout the game, notably making an impressive save with only forty seconds left to maintain EMU's lead.
Statistically, EMU outshot Kent State 12-9 and had a significant advantage in corner kicks at 9-4. With this win, Eastern's overall record improved to 6-6-4 (2-3-4 MAC), while Kent State fell to 7-6-3 (4-4-2 MAC).
Sophomore Sarah Van Euwen and redshirt sophomore Scarlett Thomas each played full matches for their respective fourteenth and eleventh times this season. Senior Sam Lenaghan also completed ninety minutes for only the second time this year.
Baumann recorded her first career assist during her second career start, while Lukowski registered her first point of the season with an assist—her first since October 8, 2023.
Historically speaking, after Sunday's match, Eastern leads Kent State in their all-time series at 15 wins to Kent State's 14. This victory was Eastern's first over Kent State since October 18, 2019. Furthermore, it was their first home win against them since September 21, 2018.
Looking ahead, Eastern Michigan will conclude its regular season at the University of Akron on Thursday, October 31. The Eagles aim to qualify for their first MAC Tournament since 2019.
