Eastern Michigan University (EMU) has achieved a notable milestone with 15 of its football players being named to the Athlon Sports Preseason All-MAC list. This marks the highest number of EMU athletes recognized since the list's inception in 2014 and ties for third-most in the Mid-American Conference (MAC).
Among those honored, defensive lineman Peyton Price, punter Mitchell Tomasek, and defensive back Quentavius Scandrett received first-team selections. Price had a strong 2023 season with 47 tackles and four sacks. Tomasek, known for his punting prowess, averaged 45.7 yards per punt last year and was recognized as MAC Special Teams Player of the Week three times. Scandrett made significant contributions with 59 tackles and two interceptions.
Second-team honors went to defensive lineman Justin Jefferson, linebacker JT Killen, and wide receiver/return specialist Oran Singleton. Jefferson recorded seven tackles for loss last season, while Killen transferred from Coastal Carolina after an impressive career there. Singleton joined EMU as a transfer from Hutchinson Community College.
Third-team accolades were awarded to kicker Jesús Gómez, wide receiver JB Mitchell III, offensive lineman Mickey Rewolinski, and defensive back Daiquan White. Gómez was reliable in field goals last year; Mitchell III contributed significantly to EMU's offense; Rewolinski played a crucial role on the offensive line; White made an immediate impact as a freshman.
Fourth-team recognition included running back Delbert Mimms III, offensive lineman Broderick Roman, defensive back Joshua Scott, quarterback Cole Snyder, and defensive lineman Joey Zelinsky. Mimms transferred from NC State with notable stats; Roman bolstered EMU’s running game; Scott is recognized for his previous performances despite injury setbacks; Snyder is a transfer quarterback from Buffalo with over 5,000 passing yards during his tenure there; Zelinsky demonstrated his strength on defense throughout last season.
Athlon Sports bases its selections on projected performance for the upcoming season rather than team strength or past achievements alone.
