The Mathematics Assistance Center at Central Michigan University serves as a resource for students seeking help in mathematics or statistics across various disciplines. The MAC primarily assists those enrolled in 100- or 200-level math and introductory statistics courses but also supports students in more advanced classes and subjects such as science, business, and fashion merchandising.
The MAC offers a walk-in tutoring service without the need for appointments. Students can drop by for help with assignments, notes, or exam reviews. While most visit for homework assistance, others seek clarification on class notes or missed lessons. Both MAC locations provide computers for online homework.
The MAC operates at two campus locations: Park Library (Room 370), open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Troutman Hall (Room 002), open Sunday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Both locations cover foundational math courses, with the library focusing more on advanced mathematics and statistics tutoring. A statistics expert is available Sunday evenings at Troutman Hall.
For remote students, the MAC offers online tutoring via WebEx, which has proven valuable for those studying from various locations including Japan, Korea, Georgia, and across Michigan.
The tutoring team includes graduate assistants from the mathematics and statistics departments and undergraduate tutors from majors such as mathematics, education, statistics, actuarial science, data science, physics, chemistry, engineering, economics, philosophy, and psychology. Tutors must have a strong math background with at least calculus 2 proficiency and demonstrated academic success.
