Major Gen. Darren Werner, a Central Michigan University (CMU) alumnus, will engage with students from the university's InSciTE program during the General Officer/Flag Officer Alumni Event on September 20-21. Werner, who joined CMU in 1985 as part of its ROTC program, reflects fondly on his upbringing in Michigan’s Thumb and his diverse military career that included deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Korea.

“I watched how diversity in thought has made the military better,” Werner said, emphasizing the value of varied perspectives in problem-solving.

Werner's connection to CMU remained strong throughout his career. He became particularly interested in InSciTE after learning about it from David Ford, dean of the College of Science and Engineering. The STEM program aims to bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds to address complex problems.

“I love the design of the program,” Werner stated. “That’s exactly the perfect way to go.”

During this year's event, Werner will join InSciTE students for lunch and discuss teamwork's critical role in both military success and academic collaboration.

Wiline Pangle, director of InSciTE, highlighted the significance of such networking events: “A networking event with flag officers offers students a unique and invaluable opportunity. Not only do they gain insights from top-tier leaders and deepen their understanding of strategic leadership, but they also get to practice making professional connections in a low-stakes environment."

The General Officer/Flag Officer Alumni Event is now in its fourth year. Initially conceived to honor high-ranking military alumni during home football games, it has evolved into an opportunity for these officers to mentor current students.

Following lunch discussions on teamwork, Werner will moderate a conversation on mentorship at 2 p.m., followed by breakout sessions focused on leadership until 4 p.m. The entire event will be livestreamed.

The event is sponsored by CMU’s offices of the President and Provost, Army ROTC, and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
