Eastern Michigan University senior defensive back David Carter Jr. has been named one of a record 111 nominees for the 2024 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Watch List. The award, known as College Football's Premier Award for Community Service, is named after Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from the University of Florida.

The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy honors student-athletes who demonstrate a commitment to serving others and making positive societal impacts. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the trophy's founding, with the Foundation recognizing past recipients throughout the fall season.

"I am deeply honored to see such outstanding individuals nominated for this year's Allstate Wuerffel Trophy," said Wuerffel. "Their commitment to serving others and making a positive impact in their communities is truly inspiring."

The Wuerffel Foundation recently partnered with Allstate to unify college football's highest community service honors. Eleven nominees from the Watch List will be named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and will become semifinalists for the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy.

Carter has made significant contributions both on and off the field. Last year, he recorded 20 tackles, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. Offensively notable was his career-high six tackles against UMass and a memorable 98-yard interception return for a touchdown against No. 17 Wisconsin in 2021. He graduated with a degree in Communication from EMU in April 2024.

In terms of community service, Carter logged over 20 hours this year alone. His activities include participating in EMU's Annual Victory Day, engaging with cognitively and physically impaired community members, visiting local elementary schools to read to students, assisting at the VA Hospital, and volunteering at several organizations including Foundation Preschool and Huron Valley PACE.

The finalists and recipient of the 2024 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy will be selected by a national voting committee that includes fan votes. The announcement will be made on ESPN's Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 12th. The presentation gala is scheduled for February 1st, 2025 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

San Diego Chargers' Wide Receiver Ladd McConkey received last year's trophy. The recipient for this year will join Wuerffel in New York City during Heisman Trophy ceremonies.
