The College of Science and Engineering at Central Michigan University has announced the launch of a new Biotechnology program, set to begin in Fall 2024. This program aims to equip students with the technical skills and professional development needed for the growing biotechnology sector.
Biotechnology utilizes biological systems and organisms to develop products and methods that enhance human health and society. The field impacts medicine, agriculture, food production, and environmental management. CMU's program intends to prepare students for immediate entry into the workforce with a focus on laboratory-intensive, hands-on technical skills.
The decision to introduce this program is driven by industry demand. According to MichBio, Michigan's bioscience industry provides over 39,000 jobs and has an economic impact exceeding $28 billion. Nationally, biotech firms employ over 1.66 million people, generating approximately $140 billion in revenue.
“The new Biotechnology major is an exciting opportunity for our students,” said Dr. Steven Gorsich, chair of the Department of Biology at Central Michigan University. “Our students are motivated to learn these hands-on skills, and employers are eager to hire biology graduates from CMU.”
The Biotechnology program will offer a comprehensive education blending advanced technical laboratory skills with professional development. Key courses include BIO 115 in Fall 2024 and BIO 215 in Spring 2025. The curriculum mandates an internship or research experience to ensure real-world learning valued by employers.
Graduates will find opportunities across various sectors due to the program's emphasis on hands-on learning and problem-solving in laboratory settings. This approach is expected to attract students interested in career-focused education.
The program benefits from support and feedback from the Biotechnology Industry Advisory Board, staffing firms, current students, and alumni. This input has been instrumental in shaping a curriculum that meets educational and industry needs.
