LANSING, Mich. — Senate Civil Rights, Judiciary and Public Safety Committee Minority Vice Chair Jim Runestad is set to host a press conference on Friday, March 15, to address a civil lawsuit involving a Michigan State Police detective accused of sending unsolicited nude photos.
The lawsuit was filed by a Southeast Michigan woman against the detective who allegedly sent her inappropriate photos and videos after interviewing her following her husband's suicide in 2020. The woman, who remained silent out of fear of retaliation, is now seeking justice for the misconduct she experienced.
Runestad, along with Bill Colovos, attorney for the plaintiff, will be present at the press conference to discuss the case and introduce potential legislation to address such behavior. Runestad's proposed legislation aims to penalize individuals who send sexually explicit content without consent and to demand transparency from the Michigan State Police.
In response to inquiries regarding the case, MSP First District Headquarters Public Information Officer Lt. Rene Gonzalez stated, "We will not comment on pending litigation. We can confirm that this matter was fully investigated when it was initially brought to our attention and the employee was disciplined."
The press conference is scheduled to take place at the Michigan State Police Brighton Post on Buno Road in Brighton at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Runestad encourages individuals to stay informed about state government matters and invites them to follow his updates.
Senator Jim Runestad's initiative to address the allegations of misconduct within the Michigan State Police reflects a commitment to accountability and transparency in law enforcement practices.
