Congressman John Moolenaar has expressed his satisfaction with the Michigan Public Service Commission's recent decision to greenlight the construction of a tunnel for the Line 5 pipeline, running through the Straights of Mackinac. Moolenaar believes that this development will ensure that Michigan families can continue to enjoy access to reliable and affordable energy for their homes.

In his statement, Moolenaar emphasized the significance of Line 5 as a vital energy source for the state. He stated, "Line 5 is a vital source of energy for Michigan families. The decision today by the Michigan Public Service Commission will help them continue to have access to reliable, affordable energy for their homes. The tunnel project is the safest option to ensure that Line 5 can remain a source of energy for years to come."

Moolenaar has been actively involved in advocating for the Line 5 tunnel project. He has been working in Congress to expedite the federal approvals necessary for the construction to proceed smoothly. However, he expressed concern over the delays caused by the Biden administration, saying, "I have been working in Congress to make sure federal approvals are obtained quickly to help this project move forward, but President Biden and his administration have slowed it down every chance they get. They must now act urgently instead of continuing to oppose this vital infrastructure project for Michigan jobs and energy."

Highlighting his commitment to supporting Line 5, Moolenaar voted in favor of legislation earlier this year to simplify the permitting process for projects like this. In addition, he successfully included language in the State Department's budget that prevents the Biden administration from utilizing federal funds to impede the flow of energy through Line 5.

The importance of Line 5 and the tunnel project cannot be overstated, particularly for Michigan's propane needs. Approximately 320,000 households in the state rely on propane, with Michigan having the highest residential use of propane in the entire nation. Line 5 currently provides 55% of the state's propane requirements, underscoring its significance in meeting the energy demands of Michigan residents.

With the approval of the tunnel construction, Michigan can look forward to a secure and uninterrupted supply of energy for years to come. Congressman Moolenaar's dedication to facilitating the project's progress and his advocacy for the Line 5 pipeline are reflective of his commitment to the welfare of Michigan's families and the state's energy infrastructure.
