Michigan Congressman John Moolenaar is backing the Stop Overdose in Schools Act, a legislation aimed at addressing the increasing number of fentanyl overdoses in schools. The bill would set aside funding specifically for schools in rural communities, allowing them to purchase naloxone and provide training for school officials on how to administer it. Under the legislation, 50 percent of the grants would be allocated to rural schools, while the remaining funds would go to schools in areas with high rates of youth overdoses.

"The opioid crisis has impacted Michigan families of every background. Unfortunately, this issue has begun to affect more school children than ever before. I am supporting this legislation because it will increase access to life-saving resources and help make sure rural schools in particular receive much-needed funding to confront this crisis," said Congressman John Moolenaar.

Naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, is an opioid overdose reversal medication that can save lives when administered promptly. The bill seeks to provide funding for schools to purchase naloxone and also offers training programs to educate school officials on its usage.
