The State Department has released a new travel warning for Americans considering travel to China. The warning advises Americans that they could be subject to wrongful detention in China and might also be the subject of exit bans that prohibit them from trying to leave the Chinese Communist Party-controlled country. The State Department says “there may be no available legal process to contest an exit ban in a court of law. Relatives, including minor children, of those under investigation in [China],” may be blocked from leaving the country.
“For years, Michigan residents have seen how Russia wrongfully imprisons Americans and holds them for ransom. Now the State Department is warning that the Chinese Communist Party is doing the same thing to Americans who visit China. I hope Americans heed this warning because no trip or business deal is worth the risk of years of wrongful imprisonment in a CCP jail cell,” said Congressman John Moolenaar, a member of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party.
“With the Biden administration issuing this new travel warning, you have to wonder why state and local officials continue to advocate for a deal with a subsidiary of CCP-affiliated Gotion High Tech in Mecosta County. This is another example of how the CCP is not a reliable business partner,” added Moolenaar.
The State Department warning also says that CCP “authorities appear to have broad discretion to deem a wide range of documents, data, statistics, or materials as state secrets and to detain and prosecute foreign nationals for alleged espionage.”
The threat is particularly acute for “businesspeople, former foreign-government personnel, academics, relatives of PRC citizens involved in legal disputes, and journalists.” The State Department says people in all of these group have been have been interrogated and detained by the CCP.
