Congressman John Moolenaar voted for the 2024 budget for the U.S. Department of Agriculture when it was passed by the House Appropriations Committee on Wednesday. Included in the legislation is $2,000,000 for the Midland County Snag and Debris Removal Flood Prevention and Watershed Protection Project from the Natural Resources Conservation Service at USDA. Also included is $1,000,000 for the Sparta Fire Department Expansion and Renovation Project from USDA’s Agency on Rural Development.

“As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I voted to move this funding forward because it will help Michigan communities and residents. Midland County has faced flooding problems for decades and the funding in this bill will help it improve stormwater drainage and build a more resilient watershed,” said Moolenaar.

“The Sparta Fire Department’s station is over 50 years old and needs to be renovated. The department will be able to use the funding I secured in this legislation to renovate its fire station and improve services to the community,” added Moolenaar.

Moolenaar is Michigan’s only member of the House Appropriations Committee. He made the funding requests for Sparta and Midland County as part of his efforts on the Appropriations Committee to bring funding to communities in Michigan’s Second Congressional District. Community leaders in the Second District who are interested in funding projects for their community should reach out to Moolenaar’s office for more information.
