On June 14, 2023 , the U.S. House of Represenatives passed legislation cosponsored by Congressman John Moolenaar that calls for the immediate release of Michigan resident Paul Whelan from Russia. "Paul Whelan, a former Marine, has been unjustly imprisoned for more than four years and it is time for him to be released and reunited with his family. All of us in Michigan are heartbroken that he continues to be held captive by Vladimir Putin's corrupt government," said Moolenaar. Whelan has been held by Russia since December 28, 2018 when he was arrested and charged with espionage. Since he was arrested, he has been denied basic human rights and has been held with no credible evidence supporting the charges against him. On June 15, 2020, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
