This week, the House Select Committee on China held a roundtable discussion with a delegation from the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance of China (IPAC), an international coalition focused on addressing threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The delegation included representatives from the United Kingdom, Slovakia, Germany, and the Netherlands. The meeting was led by Chairman Moolenaar, U.S. Co-Chair of IPAC, and Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi.
The topics discussed included authoritarian aggression, global trade and security, and support for Taiwan. Chairman Moolenaar emphasized the importance of unity among democracies in countering CCP influence: “The Chinese Communist Party is working overtime to divide democracies and exploit the gaps between us,” he stated. “That’s why today’s IPAC roundtable is so important.”
Jan Paternotte MP, Dutch Co-Chair of IPAC, echoed this sentiment: “Authoritarian aggression thrives when democracies are divided,” he said. “This joint commitment shows that transatlantic lawmakers are united in defending freedom and resisting CCP influence.”
Following the roundtable, a joint statement was signed by members of both groups reaffirming their commitment to democratic values in response to CCP aggression. The statement highlighted concerns over China’s actions in various regions and its efforts to undermine democratic institutions.
Signatories of the statement included Chairman Moolenaar (R-Mich.), Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi (R-Ill.), Representatives Dunn (R-Fla.), Johnson (R-S.D.), and Newhouse (R-Wash).
