Eastern Michigan University has announced the addition of women's lightweight rowing as a varsity sport, set to begin in the 2026-27 academic year. This move marks the 25th anniversary of EMU rowing and adds to the university's commitment to the sport and its community.

The introduction of this program will increase Eastern Michigan's total number of varsity sports to 20, including 13 for women. "Adding women's lightweight rowing reflects our continued investment in student-athletes and in providing new pathways for competitive excellence and personal development," stated Scott Wetherbee, Vice President and Director of Athletics. He noted that it was a natural progression given EMU's strong rowing venue and growing reputation in national rowing.

Lightweight rowing is regulated by the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA), which conducts national championships for various categories, including women's lightweight. Female rowers must meet a maximum weight requirement, excluding the coxswain. National titles are awarded in events such as the lightweight eight.

EMU's decision aligns with trends seen at other institutions like Boston University, Georgetown, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, Wisconsin, and Gordon College. "It's a privilege to be at a university that truly values rowing," said Kemp Savage, Head Rowing Coach at EMU.

The Mid-American Conference (MAC) will also sponsor women's rowing as a championship sport starting in 2025-26. The first MAC Championship is slated for spring 2026 with Eastern Michigan hosting at Ford Lake.

The EMU Rowing Course on Ford Lake opened in April 2024 through collaboration between Eastern Michigan, Destination Ann Arbor, Marriott Eagle Crest, and Ypsilanti Charter Township. Designed by Tim Royalty with features supporting major competitions, it could significantly impact the local economy.

Eastern Michigan University has been part of the Mid-American Conference since 1971 with numerous team championships under its belt. For more information about EMU athletics or academics visit their respective websites.
