Brian Dooley's journey in football continues as he prepares for the Michigan Panthers' final home game of the regular season at Ford Field. Originally from Eastern Michigan University, where he set records as an offensive lineman, Dooley now plays in the United Football League. Despite living in Texas, he returns to Michigan for games.
"I'm just grateful," Dooley said during an interview with EMU staffers Elena Davis and Greg Steiner. "It's pretty wild still being able to play football in Michigan — even though I'm living down in Texas now."
Dooley's career has been marked by perseverance and selflessness. In 2023, he gave up his full-ride scholarship so a teammate could remain on the team. "It wasn't about attention," Dooley stated. "That's just how I was raised."
He received national recognition for his actions and credits EMU Head Coach Chris Creighton for instilling values of respect and kindness. "He always preached how you treat people," Dooley noted.
After college, Dooley had a stint with the NFL's Tennessee Titans before joining the Michigan Panthers. Despite not practicing at Ford Field, playing there feels special to him. "When we come back for home games, it means a lot," he mentioned.
Dooley also reflects on his time at Eastern Michigan fondly, considering starting a scholarship in memory of a professor who passed away during COVID-19. He is committed to giving back through community service and mission trips.
As the Panthers aim for postseason success, Dooley emphasizes the importance of fan support. "If we don't get home-field advantage in the playoffs, this is it," he said.
Throughout his career, Dooley remains connected to his roots and embodies the values Eastern Michigan hopes to instill in its players. "When someone says 'Eastern Michigan,' the first word that comes to mind is 'family,'" he concluded.
