Spring football activities at Eastern Michigan University have provided a period of growth under the direction of Defensive Coordinator Ben Needham. With new players assuming vital roles, the Eagles are concentrating on fundamentals in preparation for the upcoming season. Needham recently shared insights with Greg Steiner on the Eastern Insider Podcast about the defense, key players, and even his choice of music.

Needham regards this period with high importance for player development. "It's maybe the most fun time to coach," he said, as he focuses on getting the entire roster into the game. Despite mistakes and tough lessons, the eagerness of the team makes this time enjoyable.

Key moments during spring football include scrimmages, which provide players the opportunity to showcase their abilities in a live-action setting. Needham commented, "A lot of stuff can look good when you're not tackling," but it becomes evident who excels defensively once real play begins.

Improving turnover rates is a pivotal area of focus for the defense, according to Needham. He noted, "We learned this down the stretch – when we have one takeaway in our last three games, we go 0-3."

The linebacker position is particularly intriguing this spring, with transfers Marco Patierno and Kadin Bailey joining the team, alongside returning players Zach Mowchan and Bryce Eliuk, both recovering from injuries. Needham praised Mowchan and Eliuk's hard work and their responsibility in aiding coaching.

Needham stressed the importance of adapting to EMU's defensive terminology, emphasizing, "Before you ever learn how to play, you have to learn the language of our defense." However, he acknowledged the positive adjustment from both Patierno and Bailey.

The secondary is expected to be a major strength, with an emphasis on preventing "mega explosives," which has been a focus this spring. If this progress continues, the defense could advance considerably in 2024.

The defensive line is working to fill gaps left by key contributors from last season. Needham praised a mix of veterans and young talent competing for positions, including Jefferson Adam, Carter Evans, Sterling Miles, Luke Fletcher, and Messiah Blair, with newcomer Hector Gonzalez showing promise.

Needham has temporarily assumed additional responsibilities due to the lack of a defensive tackles coach. "I love it," he expressed, embracing the return to the defensive line room.

Spring practices have benefited from warm weather, as Needham appreciated the outdoor conditions for their impact on the team's practice quality.

Recent exchanges with EMU's offense have provided challenges highlighted by offensive evolutions, with Needham recognizing the creative strategies of the offensive staff in keeping defenses on their toes.

To conclude, Needham, a classical music enthusiast, shared his playlist choices, including Brahms and Mahler, adding a unique touch to spring practice routines.

Fans are encouraged to attend the Spring Game on April 11 at Rynearson Stadium, where they can engage with EMU representatives to secure 2025 season tickets, offering a range of packages and benefits.

Tickets can be purchased online, by phone, or in person at the EMU Ticket Office.
