The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team achieved a commendable seventh place in the Chattanooga Classic, held March 28-29, at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee. The event featured 15 teams, with the Eagles finishing ahead of several notable teams, including Campbell University, University of Michigan, and Xavier University, all ranked within the national top 100.
Freshman Mariana Vega was the standout performer for the EMU team, tying for 18th place overall. Vega's score of 8-over 224 also marked her third top 20 finish in her collegiate career. She made headlines with her performance against highly-ranked players, tying with Megan Streicher and Addison Klonowski while outperforming others like Alicia Olsson and Helen Yeung.
Savannah de Bock, another key player, tied for 30th place with a score of 12-over 228, aided by her 10 birdies. Erina Tan and Riley Kim also contributed to the team's performance, finishing tied for 54th and 58th, respectively. Angelica Holman rounded out the team's efforts, tying for 76th place.
For the team standings, the University of Florida topped the leaderboard with a total score of 880, followed by the University of Virginia and tied positions for the University of North Carolina and University of Wisconsin. Eastern Michigan recorded a total score of 913, demonstrating competitiveness by defeating Campbell, Michigan, and Xavier.
The Eagles' victory over Michigan also carries significance within the Mid-American Conference, as defeating a team from a "Power Four" conference allows the team to 'Fly the Flag.' These performances set the stage for Eastern Michigan's upcoming events, where players will compete in the Augusta National Women's Amateur and the Boilermaker Classic at Purdue University.
