The Eastern Michigan University (EMU) tennis team secured a narrow 4-3 victory against Western Michigan University (WMU) in a home match held at Ypsilanti's Chippewa Club on March 28, 2025. This win comes just a week after narrowly losing to the same opponent by the same score in Kalamazoo in a Mid-American Conference (MAC) match.
Head Coach Ryan Kucera expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating, "It was a great team win today! Our doubles point was excellent. We had great energy, played together, and executed well. To follow that up and keep them under pressure with our discipline and physicality was what got us over the hump. (I am) proud to get this bounce back after the tough loss to them last week and excited to take this momentum into Sunday!"
The Eagles began the match by winning the doubles point. Sabina Brichackova and Prerna Vichare triumphed at No. 1 doubles with a 6-0 score, while Viki Hazmukova and Kseniia Saenko secured a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles, taking the point for EMU. The No. 3 pairing of Marta Komar and Daniella Shved was not completed as EMU had already secured the doubles point.
In singles, Brichackova won at No. 4, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Shved followed with a win at No. 2 singles, extending the lead to 3-0 after overcoming opponent Christine Gouws in straight sets. Komar clinched the team victory by winning her No. 6 singles match in three sets, pushing the overall score to 4-0. WMU made a comeback in the remaining singles matches, ultimately leading to a final score of 4-3.
The match marked a positive step for Eastern Michigan, improving their overall record to 9-8 with a 2-2 mark in MAC play. The team has also maintained a strong 8-1 record at home.
The Eagles will next face the RedHawks of Miami University on March 30, 2025, in a home match scheduled for 1 p.m at the Chippewa Club.
