The Eastern Michigan University baseball team could not hold its lead and fell to Ohio University 4-3 in the first game of their Mid-American Conference series. The game, characterized by a pitchers' duel, took place at Bob Wren Stadium.

Senior pitcher Drew Beckner had an impressive start for Eastern Michigan, retiring the first 14 Ohio batters he faced and maintaining a perfect game bid into the fifth inning. "Beckner shined throughout the day as he retired the first 14 batters he faced," notes the team's report. He was relieved in the sixth inning after allowing three runs on four hits.

On offense, junior outfielder John Hale was prominent for the Eagles, contributing two hits in four at-bats and one RBI. Eastern Michigan initially took the lead through Hale's single that scored Giano Zuccaro and expanded their lead when Bruce Jellison was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing Cooper Vance to score.

Connor Walsh helped Eastern Michigan level the score at 3-3 with an RBI single in the sixth inning. The go-ahead run for Ohio came in the seventh, creating a 4-3 lead that Eastern Michigan could not overcome in the final innings. The Bobcats' scoring was capped by a run batted in following a stolen base.

This defeat results in Eastern Michigan's conference record adjusting to 6-4, while their overall record is now 11-11. Ohio improved their conference record to 3-7.

Several notable statistics emerged from the game. Eastern Michigan did not allow an extra-base hit for the second time this season. "Eastern held its opponent under five runs for the fifth time this season," highlights a positive aspect of their defensive performance.

This game marks the 142nd encounter between the Eagles and Bobcats, with both teams holding 71 wins each in the series. Beckner's inning streak was the longest seen by an Eastern Michigan pitcher this season, following Luke Russo's streak in 2023.

The teams are set to meet again in a doubleheader at the same venue, with games streaming live on ESPN+. Fans are encouraged to follow EMU Baseball on their social media for updates.
